Madrassa and Maristan of Sultan Qalawun - Islamic Cairo

Sultan Qalawun's maristan ("hospital") was completed in 1284. The Maristan had large wards for segregating diseases, such as fevers, ophthalmia, and dysentery. There were baths, a dispensary, kitchens, and storerooms as well as well-stocked laboratories and a hall for lectures in medicine.

Attached to the complex were a mosque, a madrassa  ("Quranic school"), and the sultan's own tomb. The madrassa of Qalawun included a public library, where public lectures were held. An orphanage, a children's religious school, and a kindergarten were also present as well as the sabeel , a "public fountain," intended to serve the poor. The fountain was added to the structure in 1366 by Qalawun's son, Sultan Nasr Muhammad.
