At the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula and a national park since 1983 Ras Mohamed has some of the most spectacular coral reef ecosystems, of which some are 2 million years old. Over 150 coral species and about 1000 fish species are found here. It is a haven for divers and snorkelers.
Another great attraction are the world's most northern mangrove, an evergreen tropical shrub. With peculiar aerial roots the black mangrove in Ras Mohamed has adapted rather well to an extremely harsh environment. The Mangrove forest is an integral part of the reef ecosystem. It provides a breeding area, and food for the migrating birds as well as for juvenile fish.
Only a small part of the park is open to the public.
